Introduction

Win £3000 cash, design the interior of a £1million Penthouse and make your design a reality!

The National Design Academy is delighted to launch a competition to design the interior of a £1million Penthouse apartment within the multi-award winning RiverCrescent development in Nottingham. www.trentpark.co.uk

The competition is aimed at interior design students of all levels and keen amateurs and will help kick-start the winner’s interior design career. The winner will not only receive £3000 but will work with NDA Private Clients, the professional interior design practice of the National Design Academy www.ndaprivateclients.co.uk to develop and implement their design. They will also receive extensive publicity and a professional portfolio of photographs of the completed Penthouse. The National Design Academy will also fund a year’s student membership of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) for the winner and 5 shortlisted designers.

For over 23 years the National Design Academy has been a Centre of Excellence for Interior Design. It is the largest provider of nationally accredited Interior Design courses in the UK, both in studio and by distance learning. Qualifications include Diplomas, Foundation Degrees and BA (Hons) in a range of design-related disciplines. www.nda.ac.uk


The Brief

Client Profile

The £1million penthouse is located within the RiverCrescent development in Nottingham and is privately owned. It was bought as a shell to be fitted out as a rental investment. The rental value is expected to be £5000 per month which must be reflected in the quality of the design. The client has provided a budget of £100,000 to design the interior of the Penthouse. He has a preference for contemporary style, innovative ideas, practicality and longevity of design.

The Space

·         Open plan living area: This is the main living area and consists of a living and dining area. Each area will be used for entertaining and must seat up to 8 people. The open-plan living area includes the kitchen and leads out onto a large terrace area which should also be considered in your design and budget.
·         Bedrooms: There are 3 bedrooms, the master suite must include a dressing room. All wardrobes should be fitted and not freestanding. Bed linen and accessories should be included in the budget.
·         Bathrooms: All bathrooms have been specified and installed by the client, please allocate £10,000 from the budget for this.
·         Home office space: A home office area should be located within the Penthouse.
·         Hallways: A budget should be allocated for the decoration and dressing of all hallways.

General

·         Due to sound insulation regulations, hard flooring should only appear in the kitchen area.
·         All specifications must be legal, durable, comfortable, practical and financially viable.
·         Sufficient storage throughout the Penthouse should be created for media equipment, clothing and personal possessions.
·         Careful consideration should be given to the finishing touches of all spaces including wall art, mirrors and accessories.
·         No structural alterations are required.



Design Submission

Applicants will be required to submit the following:

·         1x Rationale of no more than 1000 words outlining your design concept, how your design meets the brief and how you have allocated your budget.
·         1x A3 scale floor plan of penthouse, scale 1:100. This should clearly indicate where you plan to place all furniture and how each area will be used according to the given brief.
·         3x A3 presentation boards of the open plan living area (lounge, dining area, kitchen area and terrace)
·         1 x A3 presentation board of master bedroom.
·         1 x A3 presentation board of remaining bedrooms.

What should the presentation boards contain?

·         Content and layout of boards are at the designer’s discretion.
·         Your boards may include: Rendered perspective visuals of the spaces which may either be produced in CAD or hand drawn, images of selected furniture, lighting, window treatments, samples of floor and wall coverings and suggested artwork and accessories.
·         Boards should not be larger than A3.
·         Each board must contain your name and email address.

The Prize

The winning designer will receive:

·         £3000 cash
·         An invaluable work experience opportunity to implement their design scheme for the £1million Penthouse, working with NDA Private Clients.

·         A professional portfolio of photographs of the completed penthouse scheme.
·         NDA funded 1 year student membership at the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID).
·         VIP invitation to the unveiling of the completed Penthouse including champagne reception and Award Ceremony.

5 Shortlisted Designers will receive:

·         NDA funded 1 year student membership at the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID).
·         A choice of any NDA 1 day workshop.
·         VIP invitation to the unveiling of the completed Penthouse including champagne reception and Award Ceremony.


Judging Process

  • ·         The competition opens on Thursday 5th May 2011
  • ·         All submissions must be received by post by midnight of 7th July 2011
  • ·         The NDA will then shortlist 6 designers
  • ·         The guest judging panel will then select and announce the winning designer on Thursday 28th July

Pauline Riley – Academy Director. Pauline's passion for interior design developed from extensive business interests in property development, using interior design as an effective way of making buildings more attractive. Having investigated other training opportunities at that time, she set up the Academy 23 years ago to ensure that training was available to all.
 
Anthony Rayworth – NDA Director of Studies. Anthony has 25 years experience in design and decorative arts management. He holds a Master of Design Degree from the Royal College of Art, London, is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, an Affiliate Member of the British Institute of Interior Design, a Member of the European Academy of Design and an Approved Lecturer for the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies.
James Pilling – NDA Private Clients Practice Manager. James has been responsible for setting up the NDA Private Clients commercial practice which has a current portfolio of client projects including apartments, educational buildings, restaurant and hotel. James also delivers the Professional Practice module on the degree course.
Marianne Shillingford – Creative Director of Dulux. Marianne was the first ever NDA Tutor over 23 years ago! She is currently the Design Director of the Dulux Design Service and is responsible for the quality of the design work delivered by a national network of highly skilled interior designers.











Terms and Conditions

1. Who can enter?
·         All students currently undertaking any interior design course or related course at any level.
·         All students who have completed or graduated from any interior design related course after 1st June 2010.
·         Students who completed or graduated prior to 1st June 2010 must have less than one years experience in the interior design profession.
·         All National Design Academy students past and present, subject to the same rules of eligibility.
·         BIID student members, subject to the same rules of eligibility.
·         Keen amateurs, subject to the same rules of eligibility.

2. Who may not enter?
·         Interior designers with more than one year’s professional experience are not eligible.
·         Employees of the National Design Academy, RiverCrescent, NDA Private Clients or anyone connected with this competition, including any third party promotional partners (or members of their immediate families) are not eligible.

3. Personal Information
Personal data may be used by the National Design Academy and its associated companies for promotion and publicity purposes. This data will not be shared with third parties. By entering this competition, applicants are granting their consent.

4. Originality
All entries submitted to The NDA National Design Award 2011 must be the original creation of the applicant.

5. Final Decision
The judge’s decision will be final and non-negotiable. We regret that NDA will not be able to provide individual feedback to entrants; however, the NDA will confirm safe receipt of all entries. All hard copies of work cannot be returned; therefore we recommend that you take copies of your work before submission.

6. Intellectual Property
All entries will become the Intellectual Property of the National Design Academy.

7. Other
·         The National Design Academy reserves the right to contact participants of the competition.
·         The National Design Academy reserves the right to change any element of the competition, the competition brief or the competition terms and conditions at any time. All entrants will be notified of such changes.
·         The National Design Academy reserves the right to amend any element of the winning design prior to installation.
·         Prizes may not be substituted or exchanged by the winner. The National Design Academy reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value if a featured prize is unavailable.
·         It is the responsibility of the winner to ensure personal availability from as required for the work placement with NDA Private Clients.
